` Let the music do the talking' .
With each members' past involvements in bands such as Jag Panzer, Nevermore, Scar the Martyr, Thrown into Exile, Shadows fall and Megadeth; Act Of Defiance have crafted a well knit release with everyone building on their past achievements and taking their musicianship to new synergistic levels, not wanting to rest on past laurels but instead, opening the heavy metal floodgates.
From the opening track "Throwback" (which has been released as an official video) Birth And The Burial is an onslaught of of metal mosaics, that spellbind and blow yer... subs.Speeding through intense nodes and modes with a thrash metal backbone , "Throwback" is just the tip of the iceberg.
"legion Of Lies" rips into a melodic goatwhorish knarlness with Henry Dereks' vocal range and style helming the intense wall of metal that is conjuring up some evil shit here. Full on armored heavy metal ready to joust \m/
Mustering up a mosh pit "Thy Lorde Belial" summons some devilish licks from Chris Broderick slamming home note by note a passage through hell. Shawns intensive accents hitting the mark throughout this album; displaying thunderous appeal, igniting the whole track,.. burning like mad.
One of the best things I like about this album, is I haven't been bored running through it countless times. Song structures and production/engineering have a polished / raw effect along with the different textures of metal genres that are present here.
"Refrain And Refracture" comes at ya outta left field with heavy rotation and sure to land on many radio station playlists. Catchy chorus ~ Intriguing lyrics ~extreme solo riffs and bombastic drums showcase Act Of Defiances' versatility.
One tune I've been blasting a lot is "Dead Stare". When I first heard it I passed it by as an A7X riff off but man it has some chops and Henrys' vox shine, which sounds best cranked up loud. Different tempo/time changes and dynamics put er over the top! Hauntingly megalithic with twists and turns.
Dropping deep into the pocket we pull out a handful of "Disantrophe" dominating death metal groove with Matt Bachands' bass commandeering the attack always surrounding each track with sustenance. AND...ANOTHER GREAT TUNE!
Best god damn song on the album! "Poison Dream" nuff said \m/an!
"Obey The Fallen" brightly livens things up steamrolling along paving the way or treading old ground? To the average ear this would sound like the same all over and over FM bs; but weaving intricate spectrum s; Act of Defiance keep it unique and boundless with purpose and thought.
Many worldwide metal musical styles are evident on this disc. "Crimson Psalm" works 'em through the gears with this hypnotic Goliath that will put yer fist in the air dropping like a guided missile straight for your brain!
The last song on "Birth And The Burial" is the title track. Plenty of progressive extreme metal digressing into the occasional death metal grip. Bursts of sonic choruses and groovy rich choppy rhythm weld this story home. You reap what you sow seems to be the theme here. Having put together a very solid album that has all killer tracks and high octaine appeal is a good start for this newborn band.
I think this disc deserves 5 outta 5 brokennecks \m/
