Broken Neck Radio heads, it's the Asian Invasion here with a new album review. This is one band that's been around for quite a while and have had many releases over the years. I've followed them pretty thoroughly over their almost 30 year career and they haven't disappointed me much in the past.
I'm of course talking about Iced Earth from Tampa, Florida. Their last album, "Dystopia", is still is one of my all time favorite releases from them, due in large to part to the excellent vocals supplied by Stu Block. His debut with Iced Earth slayed and I was more than excited to here some new material
Here we are in 2014 and I've been taking a good long listen to their newest effort which is entitled "Plagues Of Babylon."
My suspicions were immediately confirmed the second I hit play. This is definitely one of the heaviest albums this band has ever put out. Every song has this darkness that surrounds it and I really dig it. For me, Stu Block pulls it off perfectly as his singing has bite and matches the music stride for stride.
The guitar solos supplied by Jon Schaffer on songs like 'The Culling' are beautifully crafted and the rhythm section has a nice new addition in the likes of Matt Appleton on bass. The title track, 'Among The Living Dead' and 'Cthulhu' are particular killers for me. Fantastic musicianship throughout.
The last full track before the short outro took me by surprise as I heard the trademark snarl of one Michael Poulsen of Volbeat. On top of that, it also had Symphony X's Russell Allen as well. Great stuff here with the awesome guest vocalists.
I can totally see some of these songs fit in quite well on live runs across the world and I'm sure the fans will be pleased with the product.
Plus Jon Dette. He's the man!
