Hey metal heads, The Asian Invasion here for another album review, so let's get right to it.
Now for those that don't know, Atrous Leviathan is an unsigned band who hail from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. They previously released their first demo in early 2013 entitled "Trollfire." I thoroughly enjoyed that demo, but it was what it was; a demo. I needed to wet my appetite with a full scale Atrous release and I have found exactly what I needed.
Here we are in early 2014 and in a couple months, Brazen Bull will make it's way to our ears. Lucky for me, I just finished listening to it. Thoughts?
The first track is 'Burn The Cannibal' which was featured on "Trollfire." Now the sound quality has been given an overhaul and this song sounds as tight as ever. It is my favorite track of theirs and I've even made the long drive to Armstrong, BC to be able to hear it live. Atrous Leviathan performed in 2013 at BC's best metal showing, Armstrong Metal Fest. Their set was on fire and they proved to me that they are a force to be reckoned with, especially for a band coming from Vancouver Island.
Not only 'Burn The Cannibal' but the entire "Trollfire" demo is prominently featured on "Brazen Bull." The new recordings of these songs have been given the glossy fresh coat of paint they rightfully needed.
The brothers Brougham supplement the music quite well. Vocalist Brent has a snarl about him that is very refreshing and is loudly heard on the title track. Brother Keith and second guitarist David Martin have some sick death metal riffs that work very well.
Drummer Stu Hentze and 6 string bassist Geoffrey Doucette lend a fantastic groove that is spine tingling good. 'Rotting Plague' and 'Another One To Bury' are another couple of particular favorites for me.
That aforementioned track is the perfect way to bookend all the death metal madness and for anyone who digs the real heavy stuff, support the local music scene and throw your hard earned dollars to some talented island kids who made a pretty damn good record.
"Brazen Bull" is slated for a March release and if your anywhere close to the lower mainland, March 22 is a date to mark on your calendars. Atrous Leviathan will be gigging with Grand Forks, BC stalwarts Slagduster and progressive thrash metal titans Expain at Funky Winkerbeans in Vancouver, BC.
Stay Metal and support local music!
