When I found out I was reviewing the newest effort by The Black Dahlia Murder, I got super excited due to the fact that I absolutely loved 2011's "Ritual". That album came within an inch of breaking the Top 30 on the billboard chart and with next weeks release of "Everblack", BDM has a chance to really take the world by storm.
Now they've been a Metal Blade band for every single release going back to their 2003 debut "Unhallowed". In my opinion, each successive disk has gotten progressively better and that's a testament to their ability and the stand up job Metal Blade has done in the promotion of them. With each passing track on this cut, it makes me yearn for more. It's 10 songs long and by the end of it, I wasn't finished. I had to take a bunch more listens to really get a feel for it and I'm sure glad I did.
The end result is exactly what I needed from these dudes. Killer vocals and a wide array of ferocious riffs. Trevor Strnad's high low approach and Ryan Knight's and Brian Eschbach's amazing song composition make this album a keeper. Every lead and riff keeps the listener engaged and ready for the next brutal death metal attack.
Enter Max Lavelle on bass and Alan Cassidy on drums as the new rhythm section is not just a glossy coat of paint. Shannon Lucas be damned, Alan Cassidy has injected the band with a hint of youth and he is absolutely commanding behind the kit wit his double bass insanity.
The first 3 tracks are an extreme kick in the teeth. "In Hell Is Where She Waits For Me", "Goat Of Departure" and "Into The Everblack" are chock full of brilliant, crushing riffs and brutal blast beats. Strnad's shrieking is a real dose of energy as he slays so much on the first 3 songs.
Particularly pleasing to my ears is "Every Rope A Noose". It has a black metal-esque feel to it and although it doesn't sound like a previous BDM song, it has that unmistakable sound in tow.
The album finishes off with "Map Of Scars" and it does more than it's due diligence as a closing track. It caps off what could be one of the best metal albums I've heard all year. This fine five some out of Waterford, Michigan are making it their agenda to annihilate all comers and with "Everblack", they're that much closer to metal domination.
Make it your goal to make sure you give this a whirl on June 11th.. You won't be disappointed.
Til next time, this is The Asian Invasion telling you to...
