First off, I need to give a little history lesson for this band. Valdur is a 3 piece black/death metal band from Mammoth Lakes, California. They've been around for the better part of 10 years now and in that decade they released a couple full length albums and a bunch of EP's and splits.
I'm reviewing their newest effort entitled "At War With", which releases December 17.
Matt, drummer of Valdur, had this to say of the newest record.
"I'm not very comfortable trying to put Valdurs music into words, but I think what is most important is that we have the luxury of doing what we want, when we want...and in the end, it will be our music and artwork that will do the talking."
I must say the artwork is really sick and the music does the talking as well. No frills and straight up heaviness, exactly what you want in the death metal genre.
The album commences with just a few short samples for the intro track as it's evil synth sets the tone for what is about to come. 'Conjuring The Fire Plagues' is the chaos that sets this record in the proper direction. The vocals are beautifully evil and the riff stands out quite well. The drums are so bombastic and powerful and each successive track makes you crave for more.
The title track is an 8 minute epic that really hits hard. Valdur really change styles frequently in this song and its all the better because of it. It really showcases the talent of the band and also boasts the variation they have as well.
The outro, which is in fact titled that, brings all the insanity and madness back to a head and is a superb closer to the album. They've done something really special with this album and people are really going to start taking notice that this a force to be reckoned with.
If you're into the heavy blackened death stuff at all, do yourself a favor and get this when it drops in the next few days. Slowly but surely, Valdur will be destroying all for years to come!
