Heralding from Norway where majestic mountains, bold skies and seas of adventure inspire this musical experience. Borknagars’ inception in 1995 by founding member Oystein Brun, broke out of the death metal mold and began pushing the boundaries, writing and collaborating with some of Norway’s finest musicians. This being their 10th studio release and currently signed with Century Media, “Winter Thrice” is a crowning addition to an already exceptional 20 year discography. With renowned sound engineer Jens Bogren (Kreator,Opeth,Amon Amarth )
covering mixing duties on this release, the music stays tight and true, never wandering aimlessly. (There’s nothing over seven minutes from each track)
This combination of melodic black metal with hints of folk metal structured in a progressive way is relevant on nearly every song. Yes it’s an odd formula but far from boring, each tune awakens the senses, and enlightens the soul. With three band members covering different vocal styles each their own, aside from Borknagars’ exquisite musicianship, the outcome is epic. At times reminding me of song structures reminiscent of the 70s band YES! (on black metal steroids). Each song drifts from melodic overtures to blast beating, fret firing symphonies that are brutal yet brilliantly beautiful all at once. Song topics are generally concerning mother Earth her power and majesty (a force to be reckoned with and respected) delivered in a powerful form. That is an instrument unto itself, blending magically within the music.
horizon of heavy metal enjoyment.
