It is time for another review from the captain of the USS Chaos, Cptncomplicated. This timebaround I get the pleasure of reviewing a new band to the metal core scene. Darke Complex released their debut EP Widow on March 17. The name of this recording must have meaning for this band, considering they just changed their name from Widow to Darke Complex. Hailing from Houston, Texas, does this band have what it takes to compete with all the new metal core bands that have come out recently?
Widow features plenty of different music styles for almost every metal head to enjoy. The breakdowns on this album rock it. Even when Darke Complex changes up styles and gives their music a rap vibe, they do it with style and class. The turntable sounds and placement throughout the album is perfect. Where Darke Complex comes short is in their musicianship. Every member of the band has a good handle on their respective area of expertise, but nowhere on Widow does anything truly stand out. Nothing screams “super awesome” or “amazing.” However, it all screams “good.” Darke Complex manages to put together some great tunes without standing out from the crowd. Every track on Widow is solid.
In short, Darke Complex delivers a solid metal core album for all fans of the genre. There is nothing that makes them stand out from the pack, but there is definitely good music on the EP. Darke Complex already has what it takes to compete with other metal core bands, but given time, they will be able to leave the rest way behind.
