Ambitious, different and bold are perfect words to describe Devin Townsend. Those are even more fitting words when describing his music. Whether he was doing vocals for Steve Vai, banging his head with Strapping Young Lad or showing people beauty and heart with The Devin Townsend Project, Hevy Devy has released his latest and quite possibly greatest masterpiece to date.
Z2 is The Devin Townsend Project's most recent outing and ambitious would be a rather large understatement. It's a double disc set which is half DTP which is titled "Sky Blue" and half Ziltoid The Omniscient entitled "Dark Matter."
Long story short, it's half amazing and half remarkable.
How this album came about is an interesting story in and of itself. Devin was crowdfunding for his Casualties of Cool project, but fans funded the campaign so much it not only paid off that album, but the extra money past the goal was used to fund this recording. Shows how important Devy is in the music world and how loved he is.
Side one is a straight up DTP album. Devy and the gang have done something truly special here with "Sky Blue" as they've somehow amalgamated 5 albums worth of their previous material into one grand new release. It definitely has an "Epicloud" feel to it, which is a fantastic thing.
"Rejoice" kicks things off beautifully and each track is just as wonderful as the last. It goes into high gear on one of my personal favorites "Silent Militia", then it leads to quite literally a FAN favorite in "Before We Die." Anybody, and I mean anybody, could've sang on it as Devin went to his fans for help for his "Universal Choir."
To hear all those voices in unison with Townsend is spectacular and makes for a great dynamic.
"Dark Matter" is for the fans who have yearned for a comeback of the Ziltoid Opera part 2. If you thought the first Ziltoid The Omniscient album was incredible, wait til you hear this. It seriously will blow your mind and that's just the introduction of Ziltoid!
The first ever undisputed World Champion of WWE, Chris Jericho, makes a guest appearance as the voice of Captain Spectacular. Dominque Lenore Persi of Stolen Babies guests as well and each guest sure brings a great comedic approach to the tracks their featured on.
Overall, the musicianship is nothing short of unbelievable. Ryan Van Poederooyen slays the drums, Dave Young and Brian Waddell kill their respective guitar and bass and Anneke van Giersbergen is astounding as always in her soothing vocals.
"Dimension Z" closes the double album with the chilling words...
"This is the end...or is it."
Ziltoid is back on his home planet with the War Princess... with a bag of coffee.
"To Be Continued..."
All I really have to say is my top albums of the year list is getting longer and longer at the top spot.
A perfect 5 / 5 for both discs. Superb work by The Devin Townsend Project.
Go buy it or die on on October 27.
