Goatwhore's newest album Constricting Rage of the Merciless was recorded with producer Erik Rutan at Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida. This is Goatwhore's fourth studio outing with Rutan at the helm since 2006. To achieve an even more dark and powerful tone on this album, all drums, bass, and rhythm guitars were tracked to two-inch tape! SAY WHAT!!! In a recent interview, Erik Rutan commented on the album:
"Working with Goatwhore again for our fourth album together was amazing! It is through our experience and established trust and bond in the studio that allowed us to push each other to the limits, only to achieve the best performances and tones we could. This album came out so dynamic and huge, partly due to the fact that we recorded drums, bass, and main rhythm guitars to analog tape. Goatwhore has a massive sound and we all felt recording to analog would be the best way to capture it, giving it a very unique quality and feel, built off of integrity and vibe. This is our finest moment working together and the guys did an incredible job creating and performing all the songs on this record.”
Goatwhore fans, be prepared for a listening rollercoaster! Polished, deliberate, bayou evil permeates each well-crafted tune.
Constricting Rage of the Merciless is ten songs of what we’ve come to know and love from the band: This music shifts between black metal madness, death metal brutality, and thrash metal punishment. Opening up with a swift kick in the nuts is "Poisonous Existence in Re-awaking." This sets the tone of the album and lays waste on your soul with its heavy riffs and blasting beats of extreme evil. "Unraveling Paradise" opens on point with untimely beats as it takes your paradise and destroys it without warning, only to leave you trying to escape the destruction and madness as it happens.
The brutal assault of this extreme assembly is as metal as it gets, with tracks like "Reanimated Sacrifice" contributing to the chaos and "Heaven’s Crumbling Walls of Pity" pummeling your eardrums with dynamic tempos. "Cold Earth Consumed in Dying Flesh" proves to be the most diverse track, with its slower and sludgy components. The intense growls, dense guitars, and thick bass-lines consume you before the end of the song starts to pick up and throw you back into the pit again. The album does not back down with its final track, "Externalise the Hidden Savagery," which is every bit as intense as the opener. With only ten tracks, this full-length is bursting with energy and proves Goatwhore is one of the best in their field.
