“City of Dust” is the latest release by Tucson Sludge metal band Godhunter. This album will be released on Feb 18, 2014. This is the follow-up to 2012’s “Wolves”, which gained exposure from publications such as Metal Hammer and Hails & Horns. “City of Dust” has an old school sludge metal feel to it and I picked up on heavy Black Sabbath influence as well as some earlier Acid Bath works.
From pure unfiltered metal songs, to the haunting ballad type acoustic tracks, this album is very unique and stays true to the roots of the genre. The riffs have a nice chunky, muddy sound that meets the expectations of this genre. Vocally this album is very gritty, with a nice low end growl through-out the 8 tracks of this album. The compositions are simple and easy to follow along to. I felt there was a lack of low-end provided on the album that I have come to expect from similar artists. The recording is of great quality and the songs have a quality that leaves listeners wanting to press repeat on the album several times over.
“Shooting down the Sun” was the stand out track, which provides a nice change-up. This acoustic track has a haunting sound, with perfect tone from the guitar and spot on vocals. This track gave me chills and should be a favorite for many fans. One listen to the song and I am reminded of “Scream of the Butterfly” by Acid Bath. Is it just me or does the vocalist almost sound like Zakk Wylde.
“Snake Oil Dealer” was a track that stuck in my head. The tempo and the riff make this song a stand out on this album. If you want heavy, grungy, sludgy metal then look no further than “Snake Oil Dealer”
Overall, this album delivers what should be expected from fans of the genre, with a little extra something. There are a few tweeks I feel could have made the album stand out more. But for fans of the Sludge/Stoner metal genre, this is a must have for their collection. This album should bring a lot of positive feedback from many sources and this band has a very bright future and I’m excited to see what is next.
I give this album an insane 7 out of 10 horns \m/
