If you told me yesterday, that tomorrow, I would be listening to a Folk/Fantasy/ Power /Metal band from Italy with Synth /flute and “god knows what else!” AND you said I might enjoy it? I woulda said yer cracked! …Tomorrow is today and I like it!
Midgard is the first full length offering from Holy Shire who hale from Milan, Lombardy ,Italy since 2009. The nucleus of what is now a full-fledged octet of talented musicians was started by the drummer of the band , Massimo Pianta “The Maxx” who aspired to create a magus-opus of original- powerful -epic music. Fronted by Erika "Aeon" Ferraris and Elisa on vox , Andreas Moon lead guitar, Ed Gibson guitar, Piero Chiefa bass, Simeone Santoni “Reverend Jack” on keys and Alesandro Baglioni “Ale” on flute. In 2011 the band recorded there EP “Pegasus”, which is freely downloadable from FB and two videos, "Moonrise" and the cover "Greensleeves", available on Youtube. They are presently signed with http://www.bakerteamrecords.com/index.php
Midgard is another term for middle earth and drawing along those lines of folk/ celtic/fanasty and “Game of thrones” (Winter Is Coming) type of mysticism Holy Shire have put together a very enjoyable disc here. The twin vocals of Aeon and Elisa (the latter recorded on the LP with Siska joining the group in 2014) are surly the main focus of their sound, one raw and crisp while playing off the sweet harmonies of the other, making for a unique and flowing sound. Adding a flute to the mix really pulls it together with the synth/keys going with a more classical piano feel which combined make the heavy rhythm and lead guitars stand out well. This band is soft yet sharp and raw at times, and/or all at once. The Maxx being the thread that holds it all together, has some vocal tracks that play very well with the dual vocalists, while keeping each song full of different prog temop/time changes adding yet another dimension to a well thought out disc. This music is original and real that can appeal to many people across many genres who appreciate great talent and thinking outta the box.
