Lita Ford “Time Capsule” Review by Metallic Rose

When it comes to hard rock/metal female guitarists, Lita Ford is considered legendary. From her time as the lead guitarist for the Runaways, to her solo career collaborating with fellow artists including Nikki Sixx, Ozzy Osbourne, and Tony Iommi, Lita has maintained her rocker image. With the release her biography Living Like a Runaway: Lita Ford, A Memoir, Lita also releases an audio complement in the CD “Time Capsule”.

Time Capsule is a compilation of raw, unreleased recordings from the 80s. The guest artists appearing with Lita on the recordings serve as a Heavy Metal Who’s Who. Because the recordings were taken from the original tapes, there is some “is the mic off” chatter that is almost as priceless as the recordings. If you are a metal head from the 80s I suggest getting a bottle of whatever floats for you…just to set the mood.

Time Capsule begins with an Intro of sorts, the vocals are provided by Lita’s ex-husband Chris Holmes (W.A.S.P). A bit cheesy but since we’re talking about going back to the 80s it works. The songs are power ballads, rockers,

Here are some highlights of the tunes found in the capsule:

Where Will I Find my Heart Tonight is a rock ballad and a fine start to the songs. Lita’s vocals are solid and the guitar switches from acoustic to electric are well done. Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen) provides additional vocals that blend in harmoniously with Lita’s.

The Killing Kind is another power ballad but the vocals are spot on especially the back-up vocals provided by Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick. Remember that Who’s Who? Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big) on bass and Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction) on mandolin…yes MANDOLIN. What’s not to like?

Black Leather Heart is a gritty rocker with a weird beginning (football/leather??) but it’s got a sly naughtiness factor that makes you want to jam along.

Rotten to the Core is a solid rocker (no it’s not an Overkill cover). Gene Simmons on Bass and former-KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick adding guitar…oh yeah, this is one of the best tunes on the CD.

The two instrumental pieces Little Wing and On the Fast Track are notable jam sessions with Lita’s guitar work backed up by Jimmy Tavis (Odin) and Rodger Carter on drums. There are some classic rock influences heard more On the Fast Track. It will be interesting to see if Lita uses these licks in future works.

The guitar solo in power ballad King of the World Wind is perfection.

The CD closes out with rocker Anything for a Thrill…superb guitar.

Fans of 80s hair, glitter, and glam will love this CD. Lita has some good tunes in Time Capsule and it’s a great accompaniment to her bio…as these songs are Lita through and through.
