Mindcage is a progressive metal band from Florida who came onto the scene in 1996, no doubt, a very long time ago. They've finally got around to releasing their first album entitled Our Own Devices and i'll be reviewing the special edition. The original was released last year and they've added a few cool things for the special edition, like a performance they played at the Florida based Pensacon.
There's obvious influence in their music derived from the likes of Queensryche, Michael Schenker and Fates Warning. Their sound is pretty full on this effort and the production quality is fantastic. It's a concept album so each track tells a story that leads to the next.
The guitar work alone I'm very fond of and it's a huge standout on songs like the title track, "The Human Race" and "Firefly." Dietrick Hardwick is the shredder for Mindcage and his skills are fairly obvious, as his ripping leads tear through your ears with utmost intensity.
These dudes are highly seasoned musicians and although it took them almost two decades to drop this cut, the numerous years of hard work payed off. Being a fan of old school Queensryche and Iron Maiden, I more than enjoyed this opus. It's definitely not a straight rip off of those bands either; they put their own stamp on things and more or less pay homage to the classics.
A solid 3.5 / 5 .
