“Metanoia” is an upcoming album from North, a Tucson, AZ based metal band. This is a 4 song EP that is the follow-up to the highly praised 2012 album “The Great Silence”. This album was recorded and mixed at wavelab studios in Tucson,AZ. I would call “Metanoia” a short, yet intricate sludgy metal journey. The 4 songs have that authentic muddy sound that I have learned to appreciate from the genre. The backing tracks add an ambience that creates a full sound for the listener. In a day and age where it seems that every band has 5 or more members, it’s always refreshing to find a cohesive 3 piece group that is able to create an album that is worthy of listening to. North doesn’t fall short of this expectation. Each instrument has its own dynamic sound to it. The album mix is spot on as no instrument or track overpowers the other.
The opening track “Atrabilious” opens the album with an eerie overture then dives head first into the core of the albums sound. After listening several times I was unable to pinpoint any relevant likenesses the song had. Uniqueness, now that is something I can appreciate in a time where music seems to all fit into the same mold.
If there is one critical point I would say that the album seems to drag on through the 4 songs as the tempo could have been picked up so it doesn’t put the listener in a daze. Overall this album is a good listen for fans of sludge and doom metal. I would recommend this album to fans of the late 90’s sludge metal bands. I give this album a 6 out 10 horns \m/
