“White Devil Armory” is the latest release by thrash metal veterans Overkill. This band was monumental for the thrash metal movement in the late 80’s and 90’s. They even have a heavy influence on some of today’s thrash metal acts. “White Devil Armory” released on 07/14/14 and is the bands 17th studio album, which is a mind blowing and awe inspiring feat. Two original members remain through-out the bands 30 plus years existence.
Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth, who has provided rock solid vocals since the bands inception delivers a powerful and versatile performance on this album. His gritty, growly tone compliments the instrumentation to perfection. The guitar riffs, structure and tempo of the album gave me that classic 80’s feel, taking me back to the good ole days of music. There modern day elements through-out the album though so there is something for everyone. If you were ever a fan of the big 3, or just appreciate excellent musicianship and quality content then this album should be very pleasing to you. Collectively this 5 piece unit plays as one and the music is solid.
“Bitter Pill” was one of the standout songs on the album and has that Anthrax/Megadeath vibe. Mix that with the unique and unparalleled vocals of Blitz, this equals the recipe for an instant hit.
“Armorist” is the first track following the intro “XDM”. This song is a musical annihilation and bludgeons the listener with speed, precision and aggression. These elements have made Overkill a mainstay for over 3 decades. The band proudly shows their roots, sending the message that they are thrash till the day they die.
“White Devil Armory” should be an instant classic with fans of the genre. Hardcore fans of the band should applaud this release. In this day and age of music, it’s refreshing to find a band that is true to their roots. This album should please listeners that are fans of Thrash metal and those that have a love of nostalgia. I give this album an insane 7 out 10 horns \m/
