GWAR! Can you really say anything else? It’s fucking GWAR!! They invaded our planet back in 1984 when they landed in Richmond, Virginia! Where from the day they came here they rocked our faces off with 12 previous albums and multiple tours that showed the human world what it was like to rock on stage and make sure their stage show was up there with one of the original metal shows out there! That and to make sure they destroy the human race!
This album that they have brought to us from a two year gap between albums is not only their thirteenth one but also without the legendary Flattus Maximus a.k.a. Cory Smoot (R.I.P), who left Earth to continue his journey through the cosmos! However never fear fans, this album does have Flattius’s cousin Pustulus Maximus who which Oderus and company decided to give a shot to. Was it worth the effort that they in listed a family member to take over the unique sounds of Flattus?
Simple answer is HELL FUCKING YEAH! Such a bold move that it actually puts this album up there with all the other ones and then some!
Coming out from the cosmos once again they hit hard with some face punching metal that will really blow the hell out of your ears! Honoring their departed ally, and telling another story on this album!
With an intro like no other it has sort of a western start to it bringing in Oderus’s vocals telling a tale of a battle that brings us to the edge of our seats for two mins. That leads into their “Madness at the Core of Time” that fires up all the instruments in a fast paced kick ass song that for 3:30 seconds starts to melt your face off!
That is only the first two songs! There is still 11 other songs to go, and lots more time on this album! So much metal is to be had here, and so much different styles that Gwar is known for, it truly is one of their best albums out there, and that is saying a lot because they do have a lot of great material.
The guitar work is still top notch, mix in with the drums bass and vocals and you have once again a perfect mix. The way that one song follows another is smooth and the progression of the album as a whole is almost flawless! Even after a fast pace they even tossed in a slower song “Falling” into the mix, which was near the end of the album.
There is even a great instrumental which is their title track “Battle Maximus”. It is so fast paced and smooth at the start then slows down a bit for a little teaser changing up the progression, then picks up after a few great guitar “screams”.
I also have to give props to the names of the songs. With “I, Bonesnapper”, “They Swallowed the Sun”, “Triumph of the Pig Children” just to name a few it really gives this album an original feel to it.
Coming in at 51 mins long this 13 song album is something that Gwar fans don’t want to miss out on, and people who are just getting into Gwar should not miss out on!
So what is my favorite and least favorite song on this album?
I really enjoyed “They Swallowed the Sun”. The intro brings the song into quite a story bringing in the vocals right after the start of the song, the progression of the song and different changes in the song it keeps it interesting and lively. About two minutes into the song they change up the style again for the chorus, and bring it back to its original form, with a powerful guitar solo it shows off the work that Gwar is known for!
My least favorite song is “Falling” it feels like it is a filler song in a sense, as much as they put this ballad on the album I have to say it kind of doesn’t quite fit with the way the album sounds. Lyrically it does just not as the song sounds. It isn’t horrible, it just doesn’t feel right when it comes to the song on here. It may have some personal meaning to the band but at press time nothing could be found in regards to that.
Over all this album is a solid 9/10 I love what they did with it, I honestly thing they brought some space shit with them to make me like it, or just the fact that they are that damn good and made me want to listen to it over and over again! However these metal rockers from outer space are back kicking ass and your teeth in with their music!
For now I’m PK saying ROCK ON and we will see you next time!
