Welcome to yet another review that really takes originality to a new level. With all the bands out there that have been trying to make a name for themselves with the heavy hitters out there, it seems that this is yet another one that can strive to be a heavy hitter in just a short period of time.
So who is All Else Fails? Well they are out of Edmonton Alberta (Being from Calgary I won’t hold that against them though!), they are what they consider themselves as Dark Metal. This is their fourth release and second EP. For a band that so far has been nominated for two awards (2011 for Artist to watch and 2012 for Metal Album of the year at the Edmonton Music Awards) it shows how well they are progressing and you know great things will come from them in the very near future, like July 30th, when the EP is released to the public!
So how does this EP sound? Well you start off with a Spoken Word track that has the guitar, bass and drums backing it which sets the tone for the song. Then the song fully kicks in hard and heavy! The growly lyrics are present with a great instrumental mix. It is a well put together song, but that isn’t all the whole EP is the same for the five songs it has. Mix in some clean vocals, and you have a sound that is really professional and good enough to really make a mark in the metal community.
This carries on for the next four songs after that keeping a great solid EP that kept me wanting more from this EP, the best way I can compare their sound is saying they sound a Killswitch Engage a bit, but keeping their own sound that makes it true to their own way of creating metal music.
You even get hints from classical music “Obedience at the Altar of Sacrifice” which you wouldn’t think sounds good when you have a double bass pounding, guitars thrashing out, hard crunching bass and growling and clean vocal of lyrics invading your ear drums. They even slow it down a bit in one part of the song to change it up, but it still fits perfectly within the song.
The song “Most Unwanted Reprise” also surprizes you with a slower bit in their song, where they bring a piano some vocals and then pick up the song again with a tempo that you wouldn’t think fit with what they put together, however they have made it work!
The musical talents that All Else Fails has, proves they can play up there with the big boys and keep up with everyone on a professional and heavy level! You can feel the energy they put into their music.
This EP comes in at 24 mins and has 5 tracks and one “hidden” track that only plays for 30 seconds. Overall it flows so smoothly you wouldn’t even know that 24 mins have gone by when listening to it.
So which is the best and the least favorite that I have chosen?
So far, I have to say, the whole EP is really good, it shows the quality and attention they want to put into their music. From the vocals, to the classical instruments to even the spoken word bits they put into it, it is all perfectly timed and makes for a great EP that should be heard bought and played over and over again! This is seriously one to pick up.
The Least Favorite is the fact that they made an EP. I would love to have heard another full album from them, but they have at least put five songs out for the public to listen to. I really hope the come out with a full length album and show us more of what they can do to make us thrash out.
Over all I say this album is a solid 9/10 bringing a sound you don’t often hear from Alberta. For who don’t know Alberta is more of a Country music province. Hearing something this good, this hard and this refreshing come from here is great. It shows we have diversity and that we can feel free to not worry that country is the only stuff that comes out of here!
This seriously is something you should pick up! If you don’t believe me you should check out one of the songs off of this album here:
For now I’m PK saying ROCK ON and we will see you next time.
