METAL!!! FUCKING METAL!!! What?!? That is how I feel when I hear this album! No pussyfooting around here, this is a Metal album that needs to be in your collection!
Of course once again I’m getting ahead of myself, I forgot to give the history… so…HISTORY TIME! Grab your bottle of JD and gather around.
Approximately twelve years ago vocalist Tim Lambesis thought it would be a good idea to get a band together while chilling in San Diego, California. In 2001 they completed the line up of their band. However today only two original members remain, did that hurt them at all? Hell no! It has made them stronger!
Over the years they have been climbing the metal ranks with their fourth studio album peaking at the 8th spot on the Billboard 200. With the combination of gruff and growly vocals and clean vocals this band makes a perfect split between them in their songs.
**Trivia time** Tim Lambesis also has a side project in a band called Austian Death Machine.. where it is a tribute and a parody band for Arnold Schwarzenegger! Folks if you haven’t heard of this check it out, it is an interesting and in a way awesome metal band!
Anyways back on topic, where does the sixth studio album leave me? Well if you missed it look at the top of this article! FUCKING METAL! It sums it up quite nicely “Awakened” is what you want to hear in a metal band, the hard crunch of the guitars, and yes there are some riffs that sound the same in some songs but, that is how metal music is supposed to sound for the most part! The timing of the songs are just perfect with the way the vocals go, the beat of the double bass comes out strong in the song as it sound they are truly enjoying creating the music for you to listen to. It shows in their music, that they aren’t out there to just make music.. they are out there to make music for the fan of metal and a fan of As I Lay Dying. They do have some slower bits as well, (no not like soft rock slow, but slower), but they keep the melody simple, and it works well for the songs they put them with.
Honestly folks this is the first time I have listened to this band, and I have to say I was really missing out on something here! I am actually going to go back and hear some of their other albums to get the full feel of their music! Seeing that they don’t just write about random stuff they actually write about life experiences seems to be more logical for them, they can come up with some great stuff that way, and toss a good bunch of guys together that work well as a team, and you have a great band that is producing great music! I started to listen to them and I was unsure what to think when you hear that first breath in from the start of “Cauterize” you know you are in for a hard core ride!
From the riffs to chorus, most of the songs are fast paced and really on top of the metal edge that it needs, solos are pretty short, but still almost flawless. After a few listens to this album, it just keeps getting better, and it is easy to pick out why they are getting on top of their game, this album has it all!
The album comes in at an average album time of 42:46 with 11 songs under its title. Average song is 4 Min's, with the longest song coming in around 4:37 and the shortest at 1:01, which is “Washed away” a instrumental lead in to the next song “My Only Home”.
So what is the strongest and what is the Weakest song on the album? Well lets start with the strongest. Well this one is a tough one, but I’m going to have to go with “Wasted Words” the concept behind the song is a fast paced one, where you have it slow down a bit for some of the chorus then it picks right back up and pretty much kicks your ear
drums in as you listen to it!
The weakest song, I …. Uh .. I don’t know! Honestly folks I don’t know I’m trying to find something that is got some flaws that stick out a lot, but I really cant. The balance they have on their album is pretty damn good! If I have to choose one I would say “Overcome”, it is a bit of s slower start to it, but it picks up with a power behind it that makes it up there with all of the songs, and pretty much erases the slower start they used for the song. Honestly folks, that’s the weakest I can think of for this album!
Just a side note, the song “Defender” I can see them playing on the tour they will do for this album due to the fact that when it starts, its starting lyric is “DEFENDER” so it would be a great intro the song if they have any time chatting with the crowd and getting them pumped up, that and personally I would love to hear that song live!
If you want to hear anything from this album check out their second single they released on this album here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQSOcuZR4Jc “Awakened” will be out on Sept 25th 2012, and this is one that you should NOT miss out on, it is a very solid 9/10. It is truly hard to pick apart something from this album they really polished this one up for the most of the Metal fans out there!
