You know when I think of out of hell I think of … Meatloaf… or … Judas Priest. However now I can think of Helloween’s new album that is coming out Jan 18th.
Now for a band that has been around for almost three decades, there is quite a bit of history that goes a long with them. Coming from across the water, this band came straight from Germany to the metal scene back in 1984, with a very powerful album called “The Walls of Jericho” which debuted in 1985. This was the same album in which the WWE wrestler Chris Jericho decided to make his wrestling name from. With so many members that have come and gone from Helloween there is actually only two original members from the time Helloween started until the present day.
So how is the new album, well for me it actually took me back in time to where metal music was pretty much standard and you didn’t have so many different varieties of metal that you have pull out a dictionary of what metal is what! Helloween is classed as a “power metal” band, however I prefer to call it a “fantasy metal” metal band.
This album has everything a old school metal head wants, from solos that will rip your face off to powerful lyrics, and guitar solos that really just want to have you come back for more. Straight Out of Hell has it all, but wait! It has more, this album has something that I haven’t heard in a long time. You see when I heard this song it took me back to the days of sitting down and listening to Ozzy Osbourne and his albums, it has a break up in the song structure to bring you the old school metal ballad song! Yes folks this album even has a ballad on it, and they make it sound just as sweet as you would hear back in the 80’s and 90’s!
Helloween is proving that keeping with something old as long as you perfected it can still keep with todays times in music! I really like how they mix as a band and it really shows in their music, the solos are fantastic, the rhythm and lead guitars have the edge you want, the drummer is on top of his game, and the skins and over all everyone is there to show you that they not only know how to rock out on this album but how to even make it continue from the last one! One single came out a few days ago and it is the first song on the album, called “Nabataea” and this one honestly sets the tone for the album, and it shows from the songs that follow. Coming in at 13 songs for a solid 60 mins of music, this album truly did come “Straight Out of Hell” with power! The longest song “Nabataea” comes in at a powerful 7:03 and the shortest… is “Wanna be God” at 2:02.
So what is the best and worst on this album? Well the best is “Nabataea” as I said earlier, it sets the tone for this album but it also sends a message about Helloween themselves, that this band is here to prove they are metal. However, this isn’t only my favourite song on this album, I also love “Asshole”. Yup, Dennis Leary isn’t the only man to make a song and call it “Asshole” only this isn’t Dennis Leary’s song, this is Helloween’s song and they have a great riff, great chorus, and great lyrics on this. I love playing this song over and over again just because that it is a fun song to listen to.
Worst song, well that would have to be “Wanna Be God”, not because it is bad… but because it is short! REALLY short, you get to the meat and potatoes of this song when everything comes in and starts to blast and rock you.. and it ends… that’s it… it is a fucking teaser of a song! Hopefully if they do a remake of this song they make it into a 4 min song because there is so much potential there. However it is still a good song over all, as well it actually is dedicated to a fallen member of the music industry Freddie Mercury of Queen, no wonder I loved it and wanted more!
I have been listening to this album for a few weeks now and I have to say this is a kick ass 9/10 for me! This album has all that I would want in a “Fantasy Metal” album and I loved it! I honestly wish I had the Limited Edition one to listen to because apparently on there, there is a bonus track that is dedicated to John Lord of Deep Purple, how’s that for honouring fellow rockers on your albums! Truly a class act if you ask me!
So folks if you are a old rocker like me… go and get this album, you wont be disappointed! For Broken Neck Radio, this is PK saying ROCK ON, and we will see you next time!
