For my first review here at Broken Neck Radio I’m taking you on a hell-bound journey into “Immortal” the debut album from California based Death Metal band Alterbeast. Now, I want it made it clear that although I’ve been a metal head my whole life, I’ve never gotten that far into Death Metal. It’s not that I don’t like it, just not really my bag. I’ve gotten more into it in the past few years with bands such as Suffocation and Entrails, so this being said, I’m no expert, but this album is heavy and really fucking cool.
The drummer is probably my favorite aspect of the band. He’s so technical it almost is hard to believe that it’s not a drum machine. The album starts off with “Flesh Bound Text”, which in my opinion is one of the best songs on the album. That’s unusual because usually debut albums hide really good songs in the middle. This one opens up with face-melting guitar riffs and doesn’t let up until the last track.
Alterbeast released their demo in 2012 and this album is a far cry from that. The mastering is great, and this debut doesn’t have any of the failings that some debuts have (although sometimes I like listening to the old, scratchy, mistake-filled debut albums of days past). These dudes have been opening in the past two years for such acts as Testament, Dying Fetus, and Deicide, to much acclaim.
“Into Oblivion” (track 6) is my favorite track off the album. The lead singer is brutal heavy, and it really starts to come out the later into the album you get. I think that the only criticism I would have of this band/album is the dual singer thing they have going. I’ve never been a fan of this kind of metal vocals, and I find that most bands can’t pull it off (exceptions would be 3 Inches of Blood, Trivium, and KSE). Alterbeast does the dual vocals and I would have found the whole album a little more enjoyable if they would have stuck with one style of vocals. Other than that, this album is great. Go pick it up on the 18th of March and prepare to scare the shit out of everyone you know.
