Decision day offers a glimpse into mankind’s history of never-ending war and how we keep repeating the past. Loosely based upon the alliances invasion at the shores of Normandy in 1944, the music gives us a glimpse of the resolve determination and valor of past wars, while weaving in critical observations of world affairs where mutual fear is once again entrenched.
“In Retribution” opens this disc like a fleet of death appearing on the waters horizon. Building in size and focused on their destination, churning into a whirlwind of thrash metal rhythm, razor-sharp guitar melody and demonic vocal rage. Sodom are back on the attack! With relentless fervor and impelling brute force “Rolling Thunder” dominates with a vengeance, thick and rich with trigger-finger rumbling riffs. Combined with ascending acoustical breakdowns adding a diverse quality to this song, that demonstrates Sodom’s courageous exploration of new territories yet retaining their coveted sound.
“Decision Day “pounds out of the gate on track three with a thrashing-bombastic aura that is captivating and full of rage. Anthem chorus chants mixed with frantic guitar melody accentuate the driving rhythm march.”Caligula” harkens Sodom’s thrash/speed metal roots with a tale about of a Roman emperor whose megalomaniac claim to world domination ,brought large parts of Europe into a state of terror. Deep bass rhythm with a Motorhead charge, accentuate this blackened opus with outstanding tempo changes.
A question that’s on everybody’s mind … “Who Is God”. Sodom delivers a gripping mass attack on the senses. Tom’s vocals bellowing the question, intertwined with an impressive guitar run and massive rhythm backbeat. Swaggering black metal vibe with outstanding melodic hooks and modes. Brooding and ominous “A Strange Lost World” has a deep mid-tempo bass groove with an overlying guitar riff that is hypnotic and intriguing, combined with Tom’s gut wrenching vocals creating a mammoth sound.
“Vaginal Born Evil” delves into a crazed blackened/thrash metal twister that will appease any mosh pit! “Belligerence” opens with a fast and furious rhythm breaking into an ominous midtempo marching monster. A hypnotic guitar hook
accompanied with a slow deep bass line are a great backdrop for Tom’s demonic vocals. The chorus jumps back into a maddening thrash metal attack creating a diverse effect. The songs’ theme covers the general aggressiveness between nations, where mutual fear is consciously fostered by those in power.
Imagine a multi-million dollar business based on raising lions, only to keep them in an enclosed forest, for the rich and elite to kill as trophies. This is the topic of “Blood Lions” a powerful song with plenty of thrashing rage. “Sacred Warpath” is a head-bangers delight with a deep rolling drum rhythm and a thick guitar grind. The song slows down to a quieter instrumental interlude then breaks into bombshell guitar runs and a hammering rhythm. One of my favorites on this disc.
The final track on the CD “Refused To Die” delivers a tight black/thrash metal grip that even a priest cannot exorcise. Intriguing song that will possess you to hit replay and listen to Decision Day once again \m/. This album is far more diverse than most of Sodom’s catalog, combining elements from black metal to melodic death metal, weaving interesting tempo and mode changes onto a thrash metal canvas. For the thrashers that enjoy uncompromising songs and ambitious lyrics, without the band losing sight of earlier sound. Decision Day is a successful melange of a fresh contemporary thrash metal attitude and the groups’ traditional fortes.
