At first glance I was like, okay another melodic viking metal core power sword wielding death metal band and how am I going to decipher this review. But at first listen I was hooked. A solid one hour (13 tracks) of killer metal music, track to track back to back. The production and musicianship are at new levels from 2009’s EP “For Glory”. Brighter with more range and edge, combining a riotous death metal charge of magic ; that is Spartan.
From the opening track “Age Of Man” , The Fall Of Olympus marches on with twin guitar attack and rich bass/drum rhythm leading this army on. The dynamic vocals command victory, full of conviction and integrity, straight from the gut. Menacing and foreboding catatonic scales dominate .Catchy as fuck “Helena” rages on with a Children of Bodom swagger busting your chops. Deep & heavy ,yet always exploring bright power metal nodes .
“Immortal” drops in with some serious deep tuning and key changes that works brilliantly with accompanying sonic guitar sweeps. Having a galloping feel like Maidens’ Where Eagles Dare the melodic rhythms of Spartan are superb. “Breaking The Chains” has great contrasting course vocals; with manic tenor wails, that culminate into an epic wall of sound. Sonic harmonics with ground shaking back beats drive this number home. A definite black-
horse on this disc, worthy of heavy rotation, on any radio station.
“Elysium” is a bare knuckles jaw dropping knockout, thrash pit neck breaker, berthing Spartan’s first official video. Blasting like a combustion engine ,simplistic and guaranteed to win over the metal-head masses! “The Labyrinth” twists and meanders through hallowed halls of metal with a familiar feel. Supercharged hooks and lyrics highlight this track with the steadfast groove and quick tempos accentuating the explosive lead runs.
Like rapid machine gun fire “At The Dawn Of War” highlights this release, a bombastic heavy metal offering that fits snugly halfway through this album. It has a familiar authoritative voice of command leading us through this epic metal track. “Titanomachy” ignites your cranium into hyper-drive with gritty distortion and massive speed leads.
Things get cranked up on notch with “Written In Sand” whirling like a thrashy hellbent demon of war . Very catchy melodic choruses and heavy crushing guitar chops . “Glory Awaits” bursts out of the speakers with a deep bass groove and thick rich guttural vocals. Like a commander leading an army, the lyrics and musicianship convey this, using galloping rhythm and anthems with a blackened melodic metal zeal.
“A Beautiful Death” is simply brutal and invigorating with chainsaw guitar riffs headbanging bass/ drum back beat and raging vocals. “Eurydices Song” has Hadassa Kosten on accompanying vocals creating beautiful clean vocals contrasting with the screaming growls. An intriguing and enjoyable tune that shines like a hidden gem.
The final track “Sons Of Spartan” is a mid-tempo death metal number that will have your head nodding, foot tapping and Horns high. Overall this album is strong from first to last song and extremely enjoyable time and time again.
I definitely recommend Fall Of Olympus & rate this one 9 out of 10 \m/
