Their debut album “Crewed By The Damned” was released in 2006 and the band began touring North America alongside bands such as Primordial, Blackguard, Vader, Warbringer, to name a few. By 2009 they released “Back To The Noose” and toured extensively, playing such festivals as Wacken Open Air, Monsters Of Death Tour and Paganfest. In 2010 “Crime Always Pays” was added to their treasure chest with a tour supporting Soil Work, Death Angel and Mutiny Within on the Panic Over North America tour.
Swashbuckle incorporates full pirate garb along with stage sets and themes in their shows. Their music is a wide blend of thrash- death speed-metal to the occasional acoustical Celtic-ish highseas sing-alongs. At first glance to their name, I was a bit skeptical wondering if there was any real talent involved here, that maybe this was another “Steel Panther-ish” record label production put together by some PR manager.
But after listening to their discography and their NEW 2014 EP release “We Hate The Sea” these three Buccaneers have the talent, integrity and meddle that proves Swashbuckle is shipshape and worthy of flying their heavy metal pirate flag high.
So let’s walk the plank shall we... “We Hate The Sea” is a new start for the band, per se, having being signed with Nuclear Blast between 2009-2010 and now with Get This Right Records releasing a 7 inch vinyl 45 EP ~ w/mp3 dl swash buckle pulls out all the stops on this EP. The opener “Beer Goggles” is heavy blast of what the band has on tap ~ deathmetal /thrashing about and pillaging the high seas. This shit is good matey ! Crushing through with a great sense of vindication that Swash Buckle is a name to be reckoned with. Intense speed drumming with harsh vocals backed by grinding heavy metal guitar chugs which weave this song to and fro.
“I Hate The Sea(and everything in it)” Whips up the sails as though a wicked ship blasting through the perfect storm and triumphantly making it out the other side. Very thrashy then sliding into a great Anthem song, really cool~ great groove.
On the flip side of this EP Swashbubuckle unleashes the onslaught of “Poopdeck Toilet” that has the thrash and extreme metal upsurge that brings the call to Circle Pit! The song has a great key changes and tempos.
“Slaughter Upon International Waves” has the heavy Slayer meets Lamb Of God vein pulsing within it.
Dynamic tune that will have you banging your head for more \m/
Overall this EP is colossal metal; all songs are equally as good. I think they will be a superb addition to an already stellar Swashbuckle catalog with these new tunes indicating their ships course. My only disappointment was each song seems too short, but worth it. More tunes for the live set list I guess and I would guess these guys would be a blast to see live. ‘eh \m/ate!
