Created by guitarist Jason muxlow during his time with Chicago doom band Earthen grave, the band became his priority when he moved to Austin in early 2015 and began co-writing songs with drummer Javi Moctezuma . “The Preying Kind” demo was recorded and released shortly after the arrival of vocalist /lyricist Suzy Bravo, who joined the band later the same year. With the final addition of San Antonio bassist Marilyn Monroe, the band played its first show in April 2016 and has since been described as a unrelenting power house of heavy fuzz laden-ed riffs, and crushing vocals.
The first song on this album “cry witch” hits you with a wall of old school doom metal sound mixed with heavy crunching riffs, and thick bass lines. Suzy Bravo’s bone crushing vocals kick in with the intensity and passion of a possessed witch enchanting old world spells to control the masses. The song spins tales of atrocities committed by long lost explorers.
The next song up is called “Ricochet” this song is fast and hard hitting with a very upbeat tempo , loud crashing drum beats and classic doom riffs from such bands as Black Sabbath, deep purple, blue oyster cult. The song tells of tales of illusion’s, religions, and asked questions like” are you afraid of yourself” and deceit. This song is one of my favorites of the album.
“kali ma “ is a tale of the Hindu goddess of creation, preservation , and destruction. She is especially known in her destroyer aspect, squatting over her dead consort. The classic sound “witchcryer” makes with these tales matches no other, going from heavy smoked filled riffs to slow sweet melodies only Suzy Bravo’s voice can deliver matched with Jason Muxlow’s harmonized , classic guitar playing
With the release of this album and the signing of “witchcryer” just increases Ripple music’s ever growing list of amazing bands that are gracing this label. Every song is a wonderful musical work of pure art and passion followed by heart and soul poured into this album like a glass of fine wine. Words cannot describe all of them in great detail it is up to you the listener to make the true judgment on this amazing album. Another song that deserves mention is the last song “Lapis Philosophorum” this is a true work of a master song writer and singer. Suzy’s voice starts off very soft and sweet gently growing in intensity. Acoustic guitar gracefully playing in the back ground makes this song a true gem from this album and it shows the range of vocals and guitar styles that are played by masters of the riff. The album is set to release via Ripple music January 19 worldwide and is one of the not to miss releases so far this year.
